1959, Antonio Saura, Crucifixion 12 -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: In 1957 Saura began his Crucifixion series, a symbol for him of the "timeless presence of suffering". Antonio Saura applied action painting to the face and to traditional Spanish themes. The painter spoke of a "battlefield" when describing his pictorial practice. With the near-desperate vigour of its touches, Crucifixion 12 doubles the intensity of the powerfully contrasted black and white. For Saura living in Franco's Spain, the image of the crucified Christ was "the tragic symbol of our time".
