1933, František Kupka, Lignes animées (Animated Lines) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: In the square format he had a preference for, Kupka subjects the viewer's eye to mesmerising effects.
František Kupka had always been fascinated by astronomical discoveries, an interest which he translated with visionary flair in his paintings of swirling shapes and dizzying spaces. The curves and colours burst from the darkness like meteorites, to converge on a centre point evocative of the eye of a cyclone. Following its exhibition at the Autumn Fair in 1920, the artist re-worked this painting in the early 1930s.
