1914, Fernand Leger, Le Réveille-matin (The Alarm Clock) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: The alarm clock is the trigger for a gigantic thundering mechanism.
Beginning with an alarm clock painted in the lower right corner, Fernand Léger deploys cubes and cylinders. The three-coloured rhythm of the assemblage sets the pace. It evokes the sound of the little mechanism as much as the atmosphere of general mobilisation that prevailed at the time the work was made. The latter is emphasized by the presence of a typically french black beret. Begun in 1912, the series to which Le Réveille-matin belongs was in fact interrupted by the artist's departure for the war.
