1939, Fernand Léger, Composition aux deux perroquets (Composition with Two Parrots) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: "I am satisfied if my painting dominates the room; if it makes its presence felt by all [...] It should be the most important character. I detest discreet painting."
Close to a mural, this work testifies to Fernand Léger's interest in architecture, inspired by his meeting with Le Corbusier. In accordance with the theory of contrasting forms developed by the artist, four sculpturally modelled acrobat figures are positioned alongside hybrid and vaporous forms. In spite of their small size, the parrots that give the painting its title, add to the humour and joie de vivre the painting exudes.
