1954, Georges Folmer, Le Grand Ramsès (The Great Ramses) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)

From the museum label: With its search for balance, solid geometric blocks and lack of depth, this painting is characteristic of Folmer's "constructivist" style. Georges Folmer was an important contributor to the geometric abstraction movement that developed in France at the end of the Second World War. In Le Grand Ramsès [The Great Ramses], lines and patches of colour are laid out within a grid and organised in strict accordance with the plane of the picture. The work exudes harmony, restraint and a certain form of majesty that conjures images of the famous Egyptian pharaoh.
