1516 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Head of a Bishop -- Louvre Museum (Paris)
From the museum label: This is an 'auxiliary cartoon' for a figure in the Coronation of Charlemagne (Stanza dell'Incendio di Borgo, Vatican Palace, about 1516). The dots visible on the outlines of the figure were produced by the transfer, by pouncing (spolvero), of another pricked cartoon. That cartoon, now lost, was probably used, directly or indirectly, to prepare the composition of the whole fresco.
