From the museum label: The hero Hercules must decide between the life of pleasure offered by the allegory of Vice and the rugged road of Virtue. This painting was commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese for his palace in Rome. The iconography chosen by Fulvio Orsini, the librarian and antiquary of the Farnese palace, is adapted from the ancient text by Greek philosopher Prodicus (5th century BC).
