From the museum label: This drawing of a man's head matches a detail in the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina, which Michelangelo began to draw in 1504 in preparation for a fresco in the Sala del Gran Consiglio in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. It could be a fragment of that cartoon, or more likely an old copy.
