1508, Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, known as La Belle Jardiniere (detail) -- Louvre Museum (Paris)
From the museum label: The famous title of this painting - La Belle Jardinière, or 'the beautiful gardener' in English - was not used before the 18th century. It poetically compares the Virgin Mary to a simple, barefoot peasant woman taking a break from farm work, with two little children at her knees.
