1913, Raoul Dufy, Le Jardin abandonné (The abandoned garden) -- Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris

From the museum label: In this dense, tightly constructed painting, Raoul Dufy shows off the speed of his execution as well as the vitality of his stroke. The surface of the canvas is animated by abundant hatching: influenced by Cézanne, the artist applied his colours in directional touches. The different motifs are arranged with a total disregard for scale and verisimilitude, whether this be the three white birds with their feathers highlighted in black, the green mesh of the birdcage or the arabesque of the blue bench. The vegetation and the architectural elements were most likely inspired by the Jardin des Plantes which was not far from where Dufy lived at the time.
