1914 (ca.), Pablo Picasso, Le Vieux Marc -- Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris
From the museum label: Picasso has placed in this still life a bottle of Vieux Marc (a brand of French alcohol), a loaf of bread, a newspaper and various other objects in geometric, flattened or fragmented form. The painting is an example of the second phase of Cubism, known as Synthetic Cubism and characterized by the re-introduction of colour, varied textures, and collage of different materials (here the addition of sand and letterpress type).
