From the museum label: Guillaume Apollinaire praised the merits of this work in an issue of Les Soirées de Paris devoted to Rousseau in 1914: "The painter had an extraordinary strength of will. Could anyone deny it after seeing the minute details of his paintings, which are not weaknesses, or after contemplating the rising song of blues and the melody of whites in this Wedding Party, where the figure of an old peasant woman is reminiscent of certain Dutch Masters."
