1915 (ca.), Amedeo Modigliani, Femme au ruban de velours (Woman with Velvet Ribbon) -- Musée de l'Orangerie (Paris)

From the museum label: With her blank eyes without pupils, this figure appears to be a painted adaptation of the experiments carried out by Modigliani in his sculptures and drawings. The mask-like face reflects the artist's interest in the art of both Africa and Oceania. The painter uses broken and modulated brushwork, leaving areas of blank canvas visible. This type of "divisionism" was one of the experiments carried out by Modigliani in the period 1914-1915.
