From the museum label: Paul Guillaume was the painter's exclusive dealer from 1923, and the two men formed a close friendship. Here Derain portrays Domenica Guillaume (1898-1977), his wife. Her elegant cape and luxurious fabrics evoke her status as a socialite. The fluidity of the different fabrics contrasts with the almost sculptural pose of the model.
