1925, Marie Laurencin, Women with Dog -- Musée de l'Orangerie (Paris)
From the museum label: This composition painted in the mid-1920s features several of the artist's favourite subjects. Two young women are playing with a small dog in a quasi-abstract setting of fabrics and vegetation which calls for a variety of colours. With works like this, the artist is attempting to reinterpret the fêtes galantes of 18th century painting - fancy-dress balls in the open air. She pursued this type of depiction of women for many years. The construction of the painting is reminiscent of the works she had recently created for shows and in particular for Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) and his Ballets russes.
