1895 (ca.), Paul Cezanne, Le Rocher rouge (The Red Rock) -- Musée de l'Orangerie (Paris)

From the museum label: Painted in the Bibémus quarries near Aix-en-Provence, The Red Rock is startlingly bold in its composition. The vibrant brushstrokes of the vegetation contrast with the overhanging flat mass of the brown rock. Typical of the formal language invented by Cézanne which challenges traditional perspective, this composition, despite its strangeness, seems to be a "miraculous feat of balance" in the words of art historian John Rewald (1912-1994).
