1919, Georgia O'Keeffe, Green Lines and Pink -- Museum of Modern Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Across this trio of works, O'Keeffe first simplified a composition in the same medium, then tested that arrangement in a different medium. In the charcoal No. 17-Special, two velvety black spheres emerge from vertical slits that look like folds in a sheet of fabric. In the second charcoal, Special No. 39, the veil is lifted, leaving a starkly blank background. And in the third work, Green Lines and Pink, the orbs' positions are switched and the composition's effects are entirely altered by O'Keeffe's introduction of electric color.
