1916, Georgia O'Keeffe, No 8 – Special (Drawing No. 8) [charcoal] -- Museum of Modern Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: No. 8-Special (Drawing No. 8) displays the range of tones and textures the artist coaxed from charcoal: from smoky midtone to the richest of velvety blacks. The work's coiled composition – likely a reference to the scroll of a violin O'Keeffe owned at the time – pushes with palpable tension against the sheet's edges. More than fifty years after creating it, she reflected: "I have made this drawing several times – never remembering that I had made it before – and not knowing where the idea came from." The blue watercolor installed alongside it represents one such repetition: the spiral forms that recur throughout the exhibition constitute others.
