1915, Georgia O'Keeffe, Special No. 33 [pastel] -- Museum of Modern Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: In a letter to her friend Anita Pollitzer, O'Keeffe described how this pastel reflects an experience she had with an early beau, Arthur MacMahon, whom she referred to by his academic discipline. It's "Political Science and me - dabbling our feet in the water.... He got me to put my feet in because he said the motion of the water had fine rhythm." She included a small sketch in the letter, which summarizes the composition in a single flowing line. More evocative than representational, this dynamic and uncharacteristically colorful early work captures the motion of a stream's current.
