1889, Vincent van Gogh, Stairs in the Garden of the Asylum -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: During the first month of his asylum stay, Van Gogh's activities were circumscribed to the parklike grounds of the asylum. The towering cypress he pictured in this brush drawing stood by stone stairs in its tiered garden, close to the entrance of the complex and just steps away from the spare room in the men's ward that sufficed as his makeshift studio. Making use of the limited supplies he had on hand - paper, ink, diluted oil paint, and ragged-edged brushes past their prime - the artist met the obstacles that stood in his way with fresh invention. He circled back to the same cypress tree that October to rethink the question of style.
