1889, Vincent van Gogh, Landscape under Turbulent Skies -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: One of the last landscapes Van Gogh painted before he left Arles to take refuge at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, this work pictures a verdant meadow fringed by a clutch of dark green cypresses under a stormy sky. A man and woman picking springtime flowers are nearly masked by the weedy grass. The turbulent clouds anticipate the churning intensity of works on the horizon, just two months and some sixteen miles away.
