1888, Vincent van Gogh, Orchard Bordered by Cypresses -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: In revisiting his initial plein-air study for this painting twice its size, Van Gogh tempered the vigor of his approach and introduced a few changes to the composition. He streamlined the foreground and added a ladder on the grass as if to emphasize the more naturalist sensibility he imparted-with an Impressionist's flair-to the blossoming pear and apple trees and to the shaggy silhouettes of the cypresses at right, albeit with no concessions to cast shadow. Van Gogh lamented that he had not given himself enough time to complete the picture or its pendant (at left) to his satisfaction. He regarded this effort as "too harsh" and the other as "too feeble."
