1888, Vincent van Gogh, Drawbridge -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: The Langlois Bridge, which crossed the Arles-Bouc Canal to the south of town, held a certain allure for the Dutch artist. He explored the subject in eight variations on the theme, from mid-March (at right) to mid-May, when he arrived at this lyrical conception. In this final variant, Van Gogh gave currency to his sense of Arles as being "like Holland" in character yet "as beautiful as Japan for the clearness of the atmosphere and the gay color effects," while enhancing the Provençal nature of the scene with a pair of soaring cypresses and a strolling Arlésienne.
