1889, Vincent van Gogh, The Little Stream -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: With vigorous brushwork, applied in bold, linear strokes of rich impasto, Van Gogh explored the effect of windswept trees. Various cypress-like species - from the dense, dark cluster of tapering trees on the right to the trio at the rear, in which whiplash strokes of orange course through the greens - strike a parity between the summer cypresses and his recent autumnal poplars. The artist seems to have found this spot on a short westward hike from the asylum, along a branch of the Canal des Alpines.
