1753, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, The Adoration of the Magi -- Alte Pinakothek, Munich

From the museum label: This painting was created for the church at Münsterschwarzach Abbey. It was one of the so-called 'winter pictures' that Tiepolo completed when he had to stop work on the frescoes in the Residence in Würzburg. The rousing festive scene of the Adoration is theatrically staged on the steps of a ruined temple. The figures shown from behind, which frame the work, lead the viewer's eye directly into the scene full of colour and light. Tiepolo's work in Würzburg represented the apex of the fame enjoyed by Venetian painting throughout Europe in the eighteenth century.
