1465 (ca.), Fra Filippo Lippi, Virgin and Child -- Alte Pinakothek, Munich

From the museum label: Lippi devised a new type of devotional picture of the Madonna with this depiction. He was one of the first artists in Florence to replace the traditional golden ground and the usual architectural features with an atmospheric landscape. He positioned the Mother of God seated on a throne in front of an imaginary window frame, thus creating the illusion of a view from inside the room. The intense emotions with which the figures are imbued, along with Mary's robes that correspond with contemporary fashion, contributed to the secularisation of this motif.
