1617 (ca.), Peter Paul Rubens, Christ and the Penitent Sinners -- Alte Pinakothek, Munich

From the museum label: This subject is closely linked to the Counter-Reformation as, during the Council of Trent, the Sacrament of Penance was re-evaluated. Through self-knowledge, the confession of guilt, sincere regret and recompense through good deeds, people could contribute towards the forgiveness of their sins. Mary Magdalene, Saint Peter, King David, and Dismas - the Good Thief - stand before Christ who accepts their penance. The wound in his side and that on his hand are a reference to the Passion and Resurrection and are thus a sign of hope for delivery from the Original Sin.
