1926, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Interior with Two Girls -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)

From the museum label: The entry in his Davos journal for the 3rd/4th January 1926 states: "The painting 'Interior' looks terrible, it is completely crumpled and ruined". In 1926 Kirchner thoroughly reworked the painting that he completed in 1908. The range of colors and the contours of the shapes are testimony to his style in the mid-twenties. At this time Kirchner's treatment of pattern, color and space, his use of decorative elements - his so-called "carpet style" - often places him close to the Fauvist Henri Matisse.
