1915, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Portrait of Leo. F. (Lyonel Feininger) -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)
From the museum label: Like his fellow artists of the "Brücke" group in Dresden or the Cubists in Paris, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff drew inspiration from African tribal art. Echoes of this can be seen in the portrait of his friend Lyonel Feininger in the elongated face and its triangular form. The tectonic planes of the face appear as if carved. Only a little later, as a soldier, Schmidt-Rottluff studied Russian and Lithuanian sculpture, himself creating angular figures of wood.
