1540 (ca.), Bartholomaus Bruyn the Elder, Passion Altarpiece of the Siegen Family, Patricians and Mayors of Cologne -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)

From the museum label: The opened altarpiece originally displayed an Ecce Homo and the Nailing of Christ to the Cross, on the left and right, respectively. Arnold von Siegen and his family decided on a change: The traditional donors' portraits planned for the outside of the wings were used to flank the central panel. The family apparently felt itself better represented in this position. Standing behind the figures are their individual patron saints. The family commissioned the highly respected Cologne painter Bruyn to paint the donor portraits.
