1912, Christian Rohlfs, Visionary Landscape -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)

From the museum label: The painting belongs to Rohlfs’ series of mountain pictures. They show the artist increasingly moving away from the representational in his treatment of forms. Rohlfs translates structures observed in nature into an almost abstract composition. Chromatic harmony and the rhythm of line vie for ever greater effect. Similar to August Macke of the "Blaue Reiter" (Blue Rider) group, Rohlfs experiments with the resonances of color. He lets the colors flow and shimmer in order to weave his own inner mood into their expressiveness.
