1939, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Mother and Daughter -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)

From the museum label: Ernst Gosebruch - forced out of his position as Director of the Folkwang Museum in Essen in 1933 for his patronage of modern art - introduced Nay to Carl Hagemann in 1936. Hagemann supported artists who had been marginalized. Hagemann's private collection enabled Nay to study the late work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner that had been inspired by Picasso. Between 1939 and 1944 Nay worked on transferring the Cubist principle of the autonomous pictorial composition to the domain of color.
