1928 (ca.), Otto Mueller, Gypsy horse at the Black Water -- Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nuremberg)
From the museum label: Mueller depicts the world of the Roma with an austere and gentle beauty. Something of ancient legends and quiet melancholy seems to resonate in his paintings. The "gypsy horse" - a term the artist coined himself - was for him a symbol of liberty and happiness. In contrast to today, Mueller saw the social marginalization of the Roma as a positive alternative life plan to Wilhelminian society. His landscapes, steeped in nature mythical associations, have their source in the Idealism of Ludwig von Hofmann and Arnold Böcklin.
