1858, Gustave Courbet, View of Frankfurt am Main -- Stadel Museum (Frankfurt)
From the museum label: This painting is one of a group of works executed by Courbet during his stay in Frankfurt in 1858/59, by which time he was already a famous artist. His studio was located in the Deutschordenhaus in Brückenstrasse in Sachsenhausen. From there one had a view of the Main and, on the far side, the cathedral. Devoid of people, the town has a strangely unreal appearance here, almost like a stage backdrop. Only a single lone fisherman goes about his work. The depiction is not a topographically precise recording of the panorama, but captures a dreamy mood.
