1908, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Houses on Fehmarn -- Stadel Museum (Frankfurt)
From the museum label: On his first visit to the Baltic island Fehmarn Kirchner painted simple farmhouses. He captured the scene with bright, impasto brushstrokes. The technique shows that he followed Vincent van Gogh - although Kirchner always denied that contemporary artists inspired him. Soon he gave up: impasto to him seemed excessively heavy, too awkward. His early work dating from his time in Dresden shows the co-founder of the Expressionist artist group Die Brückein search of his own artistic hand.
