1889, Henri Fantin-Latour, Flower Still Life: Autumn Chrysanthemums in a White Vase -- Stadel Museum (Frankfurt)
From the museum label: The late summer bouquet blossoms in red, white and pink before a monochrome background. The artist stages his motif simply and modestly. Whereas the Impressionists among his friends tended towards the dissolution of the pictorial subject as the nineteenth century drew to a close, Fantin-Latour remained more indebted to tradition. He combined the precise, delicate aesthetic of the Old Masters he emulated with the Realists' interest in everyday life - an artistic concept he shared with his artist friend Otto Scholderer, a native of Frankfurt.
