1880, Claude Monet, Springtime near Vetheuil -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)
From the museum label: Seen from close up, the picture, with its otherwise discreet greys and purples, could almost be described as gaudy. The trees on the banks of the Seine have been rapidly sketched in blue and green, while the vegetation in the foreground is merely hinted at with vehement bluish- green brushstrokes on the sand-coloured canvas, which shows through everywhere. The filigree branches of the plum tree are enlivened with white blossoms. Monet, the real inventor of Impressionism, has created a masterpiece with this picture, and we are very pleased to be able to show it to you, for it was donated to the museum on just one condition: the name of the generous donor, a lady, must remain secret for all time.
