1516, Berardino Luini, Ecce Homo -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)
From the museum label: The painter of this Ecce Homo is using the stylistic means of portraiture to convey the haunting nature of the scene. The half-figure depiction without any landscape or interior details totally dominated by the close-up view. The beholder is standing face to face with Christ. The two guards left and right are tugging at the red mocking robe as if at a curtain, as though they wanted to go a step further and display a naked Jesus. At the same time the red is flowing from His shoulders almost like blood.
