1909, Paul Signac, Constantinople: New Mosque -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)
From the museum label: Paul Signac, a leading exponent of Neo-Impressionism in France, is represented in the Wallraf collection by works marking various phases of his career. But what has been missing till now is a painting from Signac's visits to the great harbours of southern Europe, undertaken after 1900, including a journey to Constantinople (today Istanbul). The painting on show now testifies to the breathtaking beauty of the scenery. Incidentally, at that time Signac painted his motifs in situ using watercolours, before doing the canvases in his studio.
