1753 (ca.), Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, The Adoration of the Magi -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)

From the museum label:

AN OLD STORY TOLD ANEW

One of the major subjects of religious art was the "Adoration of the Magi". The location had to be humble, with overt signs of poverty and neglect, but by and large Tiepolo leaves this aside. Even the ruined state of the stable is merely hinted at, and the painting possesses in fact a great radiance. The work is dominated by the white gown of the older king; his gold brocade mantle forms the centre of the composition and gives a sumptuous feeling to the work. Thus it is the actual scene that is depicted: not something that had its end in the gloomy reality of a stable but a moment in which the Son of God is glorified.
