1655 (ca.), Pieter de Hooch, Officer in a Tavern -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)

From the museum label:

AN OFFICER AND GENTLEMAN?

Soldiers taking a break in a tavern - alongside the guardroom, a favourite venue for the depiction of their vices. Smoking, drinking, whoring: the soldiers' reputation left something to be desired. Here, a girl is giving an officer the come-on, with wine and a coquettish smile; he himself cuts a jaunty figure with his orange sash and boot-tops. Meanwhile the old woman is involving his unkempt companion in a card game. Against the bare interior, both women are conspicuously tarted up. Black dress and white lace on the one hand, brightly coloured skirt and jacket on the other. All above board, of course!
