1884, Gustave Caillebotte, The Yellow Fields at Gennevilliers (detail) -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)
From the museum label: The painting belongs to a group of six radically abstracted landscapes that Gustave Caillebotte created in 1884, depicting - chromaticly simplified - vegetable fields. The artist's classic feeling for structure is also present in these landscapes - as is his love of perspective and sharp diagonals.
What makes the paintings full of movement and life, despite the absence of human figures, is the way in which Caillebotte layers his pigments with rich abandon, applying dashes of paint with thick brushstrokes. The colour appears in places to have been squeezed directly from the tube in these outstanding and dynamic modern landscapes.
