1910, Ferdinand Hodler, Portrait of Giulia Leonardi -- Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne)
From the museum label: Hodler met the Italian singer Giulia Leonardi in a café in Geneva. He was immediately taken by her austere beauty and above all her Mediterranean temperament. He engaged her as a model and captured her features in numerous studies. Hodler's emotional approach is reflected in the strong colours and expressive application of paint. He has chosen to crop the motif severely, but this adds all the more strength to the head, which is slightly turned. With her restrained smile and the coquettish look in her eyes, the model has the painter under control. And doubtless not just him.
