1932 (ca.), Elfriede Stegemeyer, Portrait Malla Naas -- Ludwig Museum (Cologne)

From the museum label:

Elfriede Stegemeyer belonged to the circle of the Cologne Progressives, she had finished her painting studies in Berlin and moved to Cologne in 1932 to attend the photography class at the Werkschule. The portrait shows the seamstress Malla Hamburger who worked as a costume designer at the theatres in Düsseldorf and Cologne.

Malla and her friend, the mathematician Josef Naas, joined the Cologne Progressives and others in the fight against the rise of National Socialism.

The distinct surface structures are found throughout the artist's drawings, paintings and photographs. Her friend Malla is portrayed by Stegemeyer in a contemplative pose, like Heinrich Hoerle's Melancholy Girl, which can be seen here in the same room.
