1888, Vincent van Gogh, Sunflowers -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label in 2023: Van Gogh associated the colour yellow with hope and friendship. He suggested that his four Sunflowers canvases, painted to decorate his house in Arles, express an 'idea symbolising gratitude'. He seems to have been especially pleased with this picture, which he hung in the guest bedroom in anticipation of the arrival of his friend, the artist Paul Gauguin.
From the museum label in 2025: Nicknamed 'the painter of sunflowers' by his friend the artist Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh associated the colour yellow with hope and friendship. He explicitly wished to decorate his Yellow House in Arles with pictures of sunflowers, painting four of them in August 1888. The current work was meant for Gauguin's bedroom during his stay in Arles in October 1888, where it hung beside the Sunflowers with a blue background (Neue Pinakothek, Munich). In January 1889 Van Gogh made three copies of the original works, aiming for 'a dozen panels |...] a symphony in blue and yellow'.
