1912, Tomioka Tessai, Priest Jakusho Honored in China -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label:

Tessai's life was devoted to understanding Japan and China as an intrinsically connected cultural sphere. No story illustrates Tessai's understanding more than that of Oe no Sadamoto, also known as the priest Jakushō. He traveled to China and was bestowed with a purple robe by emperor Zhenzong (968-1022) in recognition of his knowledge. Jakushō remained there until his death in 1034. In Tessai's painting, he is shown in his adopted homeland wearing the purple robe. The inscription is the text of a letter purportedly sent by the Japanese regent Fujiwara Michinaga (966-1028) to Jakushō in China.
