1914, Tomioka Tessai, Tao Yuanming Visiting Huiyuan's Temple on Mount Lu -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label:

In this painting, Tessai imagines the renowned Chinese poet Tao Yuanming (365-427) ascending Mount Lu to visit his old friend, the Buddhist priest Huiyuan (334-416), founder of the Pure Land sect. Tessai writes in his inscription that he based his painting on an obscure Chinese text called Du Xianyuan ji. He often painted encounters between some of his favorite historical figures, emphasizing the human relationships at the core of their storied lives.
