Ay-Ō based this composition on a popular type of religious painting used for centuries by Buddhist monks to show their congregations what would happen to them after death. Most of the space is devoted to displaying, in graphic detail, the horrible fates awaiting sinners. Ay-Ō believes that, throughout history and all around the world, people have always enjoyed looking at images of hell more than images of heaven. Ay-Ō and his printer have playfully written their own names on the paper being handed to Enma, one of the judges of hell.
