1886, Vincent van Gogh, Roses and peonies -- Kroller-Muller Museum (Otterlo)

From the museum label: The numerous flower pieces that Van Gogh painted in Paris came about partly due to a shortage of funds. 'I hadn't the money to pay models: he writes to a colleague, 'but I have made a series of colour studies by simply painting flowers'. He receives bouquets of flowers from friends and acquaintances for these studies in the use of colour and paint. In these works, he strives to 'render intense colour and not a grey harmony'. For Roses and peonies he uses bright red and green tints. The paint is thickly applied to the canvas, which gives the work an impasto appearance.
