1889, Vincent van Gogh, Enclosed wheat field with rising sun -- Kroller-Muller Museum (Otterlo)

From the museum label: In May 1889, after suffering several breakdowns, Van Gogh has himself admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. Even while in hospital he continues painting as much as possible. During this one-year period he produces more than a hundred and forty paintings, a large number of drawings in chalk, pencil and reed pen and a series of watercolours. For example, he makes numerous paintings and drawings of the wheat field that he can see from the window of his room on the first floor. Enclosed wheat field with rising sun is probably the first of this series. The wheat is still partly green and poppies and daisies are in bloom in the front of the field. Van Gogh is thrilled with this view: 'But what a beautiful land and what beautiful blue and what a sun! And yet I've only seen the garden and what I can make out through the window'.
